According to the National Weather Service, an extreme heat warning is in effect through Wednesday night for much of the greater Bay Area, as temperatures could reach 110 degrees in some inland locations and as high as 96 degrees in the center of San Francisco.

Triple-digit temperatures were recorded early Tuesday afternoon in places like Olema Valley in Marin County, which had a reading of 104 degrees, and Livermore, which was 100 degrees at 1 p.m.

The weather service encourages area residents and visitors to never leave people or pets in hot cars, limit outdoor activities in the afternoon and evening, and stay hydrated and take cooling breaks.

Forecasters expect a gradual cooling later in the week, but temperatures will still hover in the 90s and 100s in some inland locations through the weekend, before widespread cooling is expected early next week.

“Simply put, this is a prolonged heat event, and people should remember that heat-related illnesses are cumulative and the effects will linger,” the weather service said Tuesday afternoon.
