Claudia Sheingbaum Inauguration Reactions – Telemundo Bay Area 48
The arrival of Claudia Sheinbaum as the first female president of Mexico not only excites, but also inspires those active in the world of politics, especially in the United States where there has never been a female president.
“Well, on the one hand, it makes me very proud, as a Latina, that they did it first, it makes me ashamed, here we tend to think that we are superior, our democracy is that we are very progressive, but in all these things Mexico it beats us,” said San Francisco Supervisor Myrna Melgar.
“In politics, as we see, there’s a lot of sexism, a lot of racism,” said Rebeca Armendariz, a Gilroy adviser.
And climbing the spheres of power is not an easy task.
“In the United States I felt we had to fight twice as hard, achieve twice as much,” Amendariz said.
“There have always been people who doubt what I can do because I’m a woman, because I’m Latina,” said Liz Ortega, California Assemblywoman for District 20.
Although according to census data there are more women than men in the United States, in the Federal Senate, for example, out of 100 seats there are only 25% women and in the House of Representatives only 29%.
“I say the hardest thing for women to get into politics in the United States is that we’ve never done it as much as we do today,” Ortega explained.
Sheinbaum in power say it’s a message that resonates and will continue to resonate as women in different hierarchies of power demonstrate the leadership they offer.
“I think we’re trained by society to be much more cooperative than men, we have less of an ego,” Ortega said.
