Cold Storage Centers in Santa Clara County – Bay Area NBC

Santa Clara County has made several cooling centers available to residents in response to high temperatures expected to hit the area Wednesday.

The National Weather Service has issued an Extreme Heat Warning for the Bay Area until 11:00 p.m.

For this reason, the Santa Clara County Office of Emergency Management is asking residents to take precautions and if they do not have air conditioning in their homes, go to the various cooling centers located in the county’s cities.

“With extreme heat on the way, we urge everyone to take precautions, especially the most vulnerable, such as children, the elderly and those with underlying conditions,” Santa County Emergency Management Director Dana Reed said. “It’s critical that everyone stays informed and takes steps to protect their health and the well-being of their families. Simple steps like staying hydrated, avoiding outside activities during peak hours and being considerate of others can prevent illness and heat-related deaths’.

The county offered some recommendations to avoid heatstroke in these conditions:

• Drink plenty of water: Drink water even if you are not thirsty. Avoid alcohol, caffeine or excess sugar as they accelerate fluid loss

• Limit physical activity: avoid physical activity during the hottest hours of the day, from 10:00 am. to 3:00 p.m.

• Check on frail or elderly family members, friends or neighbors frequently

• Never leave other people or pets in a closed, parked car.

• Stay in air-conditioned areas whenever possible

• Cool down by taking a bath or shower: Cold baths or wet towels work best. Do not cool children in alcohol baths

• Wear cool clothes: Light, light-colored, loose-fitting clothes can help you stay cool. Cotton clothes are good because they allow sweat to evaporate

• Don’t cover babies too much: Babies don’t tolerate heat well because their sweat glands are not fully developed. Do not put them in blankets or heavy clothing

• Cover your head: Wear a wide-brimmed, ventilated hat or use an umbrella when outdoors, as the head absorbs heat easily.

• Wear sunglasses and sunscreen: Use sunscreen with SPF 15 or higher when outdoors.

• Rest often in shady places: look for shady places to cool off when you are outdoors
