Jimmy Carter Turns 100 – Telemundo Bay Area 48
WASHINGTON DC – Former US President Jimmy Carter (1977-1981) turns 100 this October 1, a “moral force” for his efforts for a “better world”, in the words of current President Joe Biden , who has honored his “dear friend” and fellow Democrat.
Jimmy Carter “has always been a moral force for our nation and for the world,” as well as “a voice of courage, conviction, compassion,” the president said in a video released to mark his centennial.
“Your hopeful vision for our country, your commitment to a better world, and your unwavering belief in the power of human kindness continue to be a guiding light for us all,” the president continued.
When Carter’s family announced in February 2023 that he would no longer receive treatment for his cancer and would only receive palliative care, none of them could have imagined that he would reach the centenary of his birth.
His grandson Jason Carter, president of the Carter Center, said this recently in an interview: at the time they thought he had only a few days to live.
“Obviously we’re not responsible and God had other plans,” he noted in the interview published in Town & Country magazine.
Former first lady and wife of Jimmy Carter, Rosalynn Carter, dies at age 96.
It was in February 2023 when it was reported that the 2002 Nobel Peace Prize winner decided to start receiving palliative care at home instead of medical interventions after a series of hospital admissions.
Carter underwent cancer treatment in 2015 after having a small mass removed from his liver, which later spread to his brain, where four malignant melanomas were found.
After treatment, however, doctors reported that, against all odds, the cancer had gone.

The former president has also suffered several falls in the past that have limited his mobility, such as the one he had in 2019 in which he broke his pelvis.
A year and a half later, Carter remains “in the same physical condition” he’s been in these months, Jason Carter explains: “Very physically impaired. He can’t do much on his own.”
This is how he appeared in one of his last public appearances, at the funeral of his wife Rosalyn Carter, who died last November at the age of 96.
Democratic National Convention 2020.
Confined to a wheelchair, with almost no mobility, Carter was, at his own request, throughout the ceremony, which was attended by presidents, former presidents and first ladies.
Despite his visible physical deterioration, Jason Carter asserts that his grandfather is “mentally and emotionally involved in what’s going on around him and in the news,” an interest that has grown ahead of the upcoming presidential election in which the former Republican president will face Donald Trump and Democrat Kamala Harris, the country’s current vice president.
Jason Carter attended the last Democratic National Convention held in Chicago in August and said the former Democratic president is “thrilled” to vote for Vice President Harris.

Jimmy Carter, as Jason Carter recalled at the time, was born just four years after women gained the right to vote and could live to see the first female president after the Nov. 5 election.
Born in Plains, Georgia, Jimmy Carter is the longest-serving former US president in the country’s history. He served only one four-year term, largely due to the fallout from the 1979 American hostage crisis in Iran.
After leaving the White House, he continued to influence the country’s political life from a progressive perspective, amid criticism of his administration from conservatives.
Since 1982, the Carter Center has promoted progress in election observation, human rights, and public health around the world. The former president has also written twenty books since leaving the Presidency.
To celebrate the former president’s centennial, the Carter Center has organized various activities, such as a tribute concert or a virtual mosaic of images and messages that seeks to reflect his life and legacy.
Carter is one of five former US presidents still living, along with Bill Clinton (1993-2001), George W. Bush (2001-2009), Barack Obama (2009-2017) and Donald Trump (2017-2021).
