Mexico President Claudia Sheinbaum Takes Office – Telemundo 48 Bay Area
Just hours before the inauguration of Mexico’s president, Claudia Sheinbaum, anticipation is building among Bay Area residents.
Telemundo 48 took to the streets to find out a little about the feelings of residents who hope that the diaspora will not be forgotten and that they will support immediate immigration reform and public safety for their families living in the land of the Aztecs.
There are currently 11 million Mexicans living outside of Mexico and 98% of them live in the United States.
“The economy in Mexico depends a lot on us being here and we’re not here by choice but by necessity,” said Rosa Pena, a Mexican who lives in Oakland.
There are more than 65,000 million dollars in remittances sent every year by Mexican immigrants back home, so they hope that the 4th transformation will not forget them.
“So that millions of undocumented immigrants can finally solve their immigration problem,” Rosa said.
Sheinbaum has lived and worked in Berkeley and hopes her experience as an immigrant will help her empathize more with those forced to flee their country.
Analysts say support for immigration reform is one of the outstanding debts owed to the diaspora.
“And start advocating seriously with all Mexican diplomacy to demand that these people who have lived in the United States for decades and who are Americans in every sense but on paper be regulated,” said Gonzalo Santos, professor emeritus at CSU Bakersfield.
Mexico’s position with asylum seekers at the border and the public safety of its citizens are issues of concern to those who live here as well.
“Clean the country a little more of crime because I don’t think about going back to Mexico, but if it wasn’t as bad as it is now, I would think twice,” said José González, a Mexican who lives in San O Leandro.
“Security because right now there have been a lot of massacres in Sinaloa, Chipas and Michoacán,” said Enrique Ortiz Pineda, a Mexican who lives in San Leandro.
In Mexico, this Tuesday, October 1, is a national holiday, but embassies and consulates will operate as normal.
It is important to emphasize that just one month after the inauguration of Claudia Sheinbaum, in the United States we will have a presidential election, a key decision for the bilateral relations of these countries.
