The people of Chagos Island hope to return after the United Kingdom cedes the last African colony
Mauritius says the UK’s handover of the long-disputed Chagos Islands draws an important line in the archipelago’s colonial history. The remote Indian Ocean islands were Britain’s last African colony. The UK cut off the Chagos Islands from Mauritius in 1965 and up to 2,000 Chagossians were evicted to make way for a military base. Mauritius says it is time to confront colonial intimidation. Now some residents of Tsagos want to return to their ancestral home.
